I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Rev 22:1 NIV
“Can I give you something more interesting than that text you are reading?” My friend and ministry supporter, Deb, were strolling through a mall in Philadelphia and noticed three teenage girls huddled together reading a phone.
“Huh?” one mumbled, looking up.
“I want to give you something to read that is more interesting than what you are reading on your phone. It’s about Jesus.”
“Who?” one of them asked.
“Jesus,” I said, handing the 3 girls a Christian tract. “Have you heard of Him?”
“Yes,” they all agreed. We listened to their varied religious backgrounds and views. Before long, all three teenagers eagerly prayed and invited Jesus to be their Savior. One had told me she was a Christian and Baptist but prayed aloud along with her friends to show support. When we finished praying, the self-proclaimed Christian looked stunned. “I’ve never prayed a prayer like that,” she said. I was surprised and reminded not to assume that anyone is a Christian, regardless of the church they grew up and were baptized in.
Notice the sparkle in their eyes. It amazes me that strangers will allow me to take picture but I always ask because I love the capture the thrill of just meeting Jesus.
A few minutes later, Deb and I met Nicole. “I pray all the time,” she said. “Some people think I’m not Christian because I have a daughter and I’m not married but I don’t believe they are right. I hope I’m going to heaven. I go to a Catholic Church and I’m trying really hard.”
“The Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. That includes the people who tell you you’re not a Christian because of your daughter. The wages of sin is death and while what you did to get that daughter was a sin, your daughter is gift and not a sin. You don’t have to try so hard to get into heaven. It’s easy. All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
With relief in her eyes, Nicole prayed and invited Jesus to be her Lord and Savior. We took her picture and as we walked away, she thanked us repeatedly. A few minutes later, we interrupted another woman who was reading her phone. She also prayed to receive Jesus.
I don’t have to be timid about interrupting people texting, listening to IPods, or reading a book. Jesus really is more interesting than anything anyone could possibly be doing. After all, He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and Last, and the Beginning and the End. If I can get their attention, many figure out just how interesting Jesus is in just a few minutes. It is totally worth taking the chance of offending someone and in all my time on the road, I’ve only had a few people “shoo” me away.
